Description
A stark and stunning architectural ruin shown in black and white to produce the feeling of drama, age, and poignant scene. The theater is still used today. The first two rows of seats are from the original architecture, the remainder have been reconstructed.
The remains of the roman theater of Caesarea, Israel (Ceasarea, Philippi) an ancient harbour seaport location for entertainment ensuring continuing commerce and influence.
One of Herod the Great's building projects throughout Judea attempting to bring in the Hellenistic culture. The same Herod that feared Jesus the King of the Jews and ordered the slaughter of all males under the age of two years.
Herod Agrippa, grandson of Herod the Great, is discussed many times in the book of Acts. It is thought his death may have occurred in the theater of Caesarea, per writings by Flavius Josephus.
NIV Acts 19-23 ...Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply. On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
